Explore Iceland’s Hidden Gems: Reykjanes Peninsula Private Tour
Discover Iceland’s incredible volcanoes and fascinating peninsula with your own private guide. On our Volcano Exploration & Reykjanes Peninsula Private Tour, you will have the chance to explore one of the most recent volcanic eruption sites in safety. Your guide will explain how these phenomenal events unfolded.
KRÝSUVÍK GEOTHERMAL AREA
Your guided tour will start with a pickup from your hotel, from here you will take the journey to Seltun geothermal area, the drive will take about 45 minutes. Once you are there you will be engulfed in the sulphuric smell of the geothermal area, you will explore wild springs, bubbling mud pots, all while marvelling at the intense colours of the hill sides, which are made from minerals and oxides pouring out of the bedrock.
FAGRADALSFJALL VOLCANO SITE
Next you will arrive at the steaming volcanic site of Fagradalsfjall. During your exploration of the site you will get up close to the once flowing red hot lava. The lava fields still remain smoking hot and still emit intense heat.
The formation of the 2021 volcanic crater Fagradalsfjall in the Geldingadalur Valley can be seen from a view point. An optional hike up a marked trail, will reveal the scale of this volcanic eruption. The hike on average takes 30-40 minutes to the view point. You will have plenty of time to take pictures and rest as needed.
Your guide will explain the geology of the area along with finding you a souvenir to take home from the lower lava fields that you will explore. The volcanic rocks in the area hold a beautiful secret that should not be missed.
LOCAL RESTAURANT
Once you have descended you will head for lunch at the local chic cafe. You can grab something simple as a refreshing juice or fill up on the local fish cuisine.
THE BRIDGE BETWEEN CONTINENTS
As you travel around the peninsula you will first visit ‘The bridge between continents‘ the bridge spans the dividing plates of North America and Eurasia. Iceland is the only place on the Mid-Atlantic ridge, that rises above the water line where you can touch both continents. You can see the land beneath the bridge dividing from north to south. You will have the chance to walk around and over the site in this incredible geological location.
REYKJANES LIGHTHOUSE
Next you will visit Reykjanes Lighthouse and the beautiful sea cliffs. In 1878 the original lighthouse Valanukur was completed and was rebuilt in 1907 due to unstable cliff faces. The cliffs have been formed from the 1800’s lava flows and continue to erode with the power of the ocean.
GUNNUHVER HOT SPRING
A short drive away is Gunnuhver Hot springs, where you will visit one of Iceland’s largest springs, a selection of the best mud pools and fumaroles, along with learning the story behind the haunted site of Gunnuhver. This geothermal site is one of the best examples in Iceland, it also has the remains of an early settlement where the folk would use the geothermal energy in raw form to cook, bathe and keep warm.
BRIMKETILL SEA POOLS
Last but not least is Brimketill rock pools, where the lava has been eroded to form two large pools. It’s not possible to bathe in the pools as the Atlantic is usually very fierce, the crashing waves in the area can leave you a little wet. It’s a magnificent sight to see in windy weather, you can see along the coast for miles on end as the lava meets the ocean, it’s possible to see seals in the area swimming through the kelps if you are lucky.
